We had Jackson Dolman from Girton Grammar School Bendigo complete a week of work experience with us in 2017. Here is what he had to say from the experience.
-
I recently had the privilege to spend a week of work experience with Brenton Johnson, the owner of Uptake Digital. Upon my introduction to his workflow on the first day, we set about a rich and busy agenda with a wide variety of tasks to complete. We brewed a coffee (or three) and got right into it.
Brenton is driven by the idea that any time spent at work, should be spent working. He is without a doubt the most productive person I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Brenton introduced me to formal time management strategies and complex project management approaches that would be appropriate for real world situations.
Brenton had several client meetings within the week and brought me along. I was invited to sit in and offer input where possible. Brenton treated me as though I was a business partner, rather than a teenager on work experience and this enabled me to be treated as just that by the clients.
I was tasked to take the information from several meetings and put together a formal proposal (a real proposal - not a mockup). From completing these proposals, I was introduced to a range of new skills to utilise when writing proposals that have already proved to be beneficial outside of work experience.
Brenton also attends a variety of networking events on a weekly basis and was more than welcoming when he invited me along to attend as his guest. I won’t lie - I’m not the most extroverted person, yet with his open and confident personality, I was able to speak up and offer input amongst those present.
Brenton taught me that seizing the moment is key, When an opportunity arises - take it. The knowledge I have taken onboard from Brenton and his lovely co-workers has helped me greatly with my own business and will allow me to interpret and fulfil related tasks in the future.
